This is the bridge either going up or coming down as we were either leaving or coming in or out of Portsmouth. The Memorial Bridge is a through truss lift bridge that carries U.S. 1 across the Piscataqua River between Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Badger's Island in Kittery, Maine USA.
Here's a picture of downtown Portsmouth. the blue house in the middle of the picture is the The Moffatt-Ladd House it was the home of General William Whipple, one of New Hampshire's three signers of the Declaration of Independence and his wife Katharine Moffatt Whipple.
Fort Constitution. it's used as a Coast Guard facility now. Very interesting Revolutionary story with Paul Revere playing a part.
on the way out of Portsmouth we pass the The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard
There's a nuclear sub in the next 2 pictures if you can see it. SSN 723 Oklahoma City
That building is where The Treaty of Portsmouth of 1905 was signed. It's still the Naval shipyard.
The old boarded up Naval Prison. it's not used today
A lobster boat, there were a lots of them as we left Portsmouth

Here's the hotel at Star Island. it's mostly used for a religious and educational conference center with close ties to the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ.
Tricia on the back porch looking towards the mainland.
Tricia took this picture with the comment "this is so "New England""
Here's pictures of the community of houses, church, and paths around the island.
A path on the little island
